Ken McGregor has decided to retire from AFL Football.
McGregor, who was under contract for season 2009, has come to an agreement with the club in regards to that commitment.
McGregor believed the time was right to make the decision and felt comfortable with the way he has left AFL football.
"What I’d like to be remembered as was someone who got the most out of what I was given with," McGregor said. "I’ve always felt that I’ve been a hard worker and that is something that I’d like to be known for; someone that was loyal and worked really hard.
"I’d like to think that I’ve done that my whole career and I’ve always tried to get the best out of my body. I think I have at this stage but it was time to move on."
"I think footy is about talent, luck and opportunity. If you’re missing one of them and one of them is not working for you at the time then you’re in a bit of trouble.
"One or two of those went against me that kind of went for me earlier in my career. There were times at the start of my career it could of gone the other way for me. I was lucky enough to have people support me and find something in me then. I’m thankful for the last eight or so years of AFL footy."
McGregor, 27, joined the club in 1999, playing nine matches in his first year while earning himself an AFL Rising Star nomination. His first game for Adelaide was against Geelong at Football Park on July 4.
In total he played 152 games for Adelaide – playing his 150th against Fremantle in Round Five this year at AAMI Stadium. Only 11 Crows have played more games for the club. He played in the winning 2003 Wizard Cup Grand Final.
Club CEO Steven Trigg said: “Ken has been a committed team player who has always put the club before himself. He intends to play on with Woodville West Torrens in the SANFL and we wish him all the best for the future, both on and off the field.”
