Birds of a Feather

Edition 2 - October 2009

Greetings Ladies,

Our football season has come to an end……….one that has taken me a few days to recover from - so close yet so far! That’s not to say I am not 100% proud of our squad, their efforts throughout the year and the promise they bring for a flag in the waiting. Congratulations to each one of our boys for a great season where we were pencilled in to finish out of the top 8 and blew that prediction convincingly. Eyes on 2010, the Crows are at the ready, so bring it on!

Staff movements
There are many exciting and nervous times ahead for the club while we wait to see what the coaching box has in store with possible changes etc. One of the biggest will be the retirement of John Reid. John joined the Adelaide Football Club in 1995 and was instrumental in bringing Malcolm Blight to the Club – THANK YOU Mr Reid on that move – still get excited on recalling the moments of winning back to back flags. How very spoilt we are when you look at the Bullies (1953) Saints (only one in their history 1966), Melbourne (1964) and many others all fighting for the Holy Grail. Johns’ role will be taken up by Phil Harper as General Manager Football Operations with Mark Colson (ex channel 9) taking on General Manager, Commercial Operations. We welcome Mark, wish good luck to Phil and offer our very best to John as he looks forward to spending more time with his family and three grandchildren.

Ambassadors
While we are thinking of special people, none could be more “loved” than our two ambassadors in Michael Doughty and Graham Johncock. We are very lucky to have had these boys on board and appreciate the extra effort they put in to make our events special. Both have had a stellar year in their individual performances on the field. Well earned. May they both continue to star in 2010.

Xmas in July
Michael and Graham were at our Christmas in July function at the Grange Golf Club which I hope you all enjoyed. They were joined by Chris Knights, Brad Symes, Richard Douglas, Patrick Dangerfield and Rory Sloane. They all had fun singing carols and playing Santas’ helper. Mind you, Rory was a little taken aback by our songstress Linda McCarthy as she sashayed her way around the room. I’m sure he was ready to duck under a table! And what of Nigel Smarts performance as Santa? Who knew Nigel had those kind of moves in his arsenal. Our original Santa bowed out and it was Nigel who unreservedly came to our rescue – can’t have Christmas without Santa. Thank you Nigel, and to each of the boys for being great sports throughout the evening.

Interstate Trip
Something a little different this year was our away trip. We were so spoilt - Cobham Airlines was our host providing us with our very own private jet to fly into Melbourne! The morning started off with a scrumptious hot breakfast provided by the tireless efforts of our supporter group. (Check in took 10 secs.) On arrival a private bus shuttled us straight to our hotel, the Citigate Sebel. As this was a one night stopover, plenty of free time was allowed for catching up with friends or shopping etc . That night we all were chauffeured to the Kush Restaurant in Chapel Street. Sunday, again by private bus, we were delivered to Etihad Stadium to watch our boys put on a brave performance but alas going down by 57 pts to St Kilda. Straight after the game back to our private jet where we were spoiled with lots of yummy goodies and entertained by comedian PJ Oaten which brought back a few missing smiles.

Xmas Drinks
No doubt you are wondering when our next function is? Get your diaries out – we will be enjoying Christmas drinks together on December 9th in the new Training & Entertainment Facility.
How exciting that we will be among the first to see the new building following it’s official opening on October 13th.

Thanks to Toyota
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Toyota Motor Corporation and in particular Felicity Peek and Andrew Phillips for their ongoing support of the Camry Crows Birds of a Feather. Without their generosity, wonderful evenings like our mid-year Christmas dinner would not be possible. They are our Clubs Major Sponsor, something we are very proud of, and the fact that they make great cars is just another bonus. Thank you Toyota!

I look forward to catching up with you all for Christmas drinks on the 9th but before I go, here is some news from around the Club –

• Scott Thompson is getting married to partner Ashleigh in Melbourne with their gorgeous 2 year old daughter Ava as flower girl.

• Chris Knights, Ivan Maric, Nathan Van Berlo and Bernie Vince all off to Europe for some R & R………(why am I worried? Must be the mother in me!)

• Finally, Wang Wang and Funi the long awaited pandas arrive in October but will remain in quarantine for 30 days before they go on show at the Adelaide Zoo. The selling of the Bunji bears helped bring these wonderful creatures to our city along with the help of the Crows Foundation. The foundation was established in 2005 and in that time has raised over $500,000.00 for 25 charities across South Australia for children in need. Bravo!

Go Crows in 2010
