crows reach remote schools

The Adelaide Football Club along with DECS (Department of Education and Children’s Services) have put the popular “Crows In Schools” program via the Centra Program. It was introduced in 2005 particularly for regional and remote areas.

The Centra Program allows access to remote schools through a web based program, with microphones and web-cameras situated at the Adelaide Football Club and the various schools. We connect with the schools and can interact verbally and through a live web-camera, as well as setting tasks, playing games and running lessons for the children.

Crows players Scott Thompson and Scott Stevens joined Joel Kay in presenting the program. Roger Edmonds and Cate Berden from DECS also are a major influence in the program being so successful.

The 2010 program is based on "cyber safety" featuring videos of Claude the Crow giving the students his top 5 cyber safety tips. Schools also got an exclusive look into the daily feedback given by players on how they are progressing with their training. There was also other fun activities and students were able to ask the Crows' player (and Claude) lots of questions.

As well as taking part in the program, each school received via mail “Crows In Schools” teaching manuals on CD and also other Crows giveaways.

The time and dates for the sessions are:

1.30-2.30pm, Thursday June 3, 2010

1.30-2.30pm, Thursday June 10, 2010

1.30-2.30pm, Thursday June 17, 2010

1.30-2.30pm, Friday June 25, 2010

There is a chance that we will be doing a “one off” session in September. If your school is interested in being a part of this please contact us and we will give you a call closer to the date. Also if you are interested in the 2010 Centra Program please contact Joel Kay at the Adelaide Football Club 08 8440 6666 or jkay@afc.com.au.

2009 Centra Reports

Session 1 – May 29

Kids from all around South Australia got a taste of our Crows In Schools Centra Program for 2009 and what a great start it was. Having Scott Thompson as our first player for the year topped it off and the kids certainly enjoyed the chance to interact with him.

The kids were taken through a range of activities from Celebrating goals, Seeing Claude’s Top 5 road safety tips along with Brett Burton and asking Scott Thompson all the hard questions.

Below are all the schools who participated in our first interactive session:
  • Port Noarlunga Primary School – 68 students Auburn Primary School – 30 Students
  • Warooka Primary School – 35 students
  • Goolwa Primary School – 25 students School of the Air (Tarcoola, Moolooloo and Bulgannia Stations) – 4 Students
Total = 162 students

Session 2 – June
5

Scott Stevens was our special guest for our second Centra session and with limited numbers of schools (due to technical difficulties) the schools had a chance to get to know Scott really well.

With a mixture of video’s and dancing moves from Claude the Crow the kids seemed to really enjoy the experience.

The kids wanted to see something special against the Bombers this week and Scott mentioned to the kids that his aim was to kick 10 goals. A very ambitious target some would say but he mentioned after the game that Tippet and Knights kicked 12 between them and made it very hard.

School’s which participated:
  • Booleroo District School
  • Tumby Bay Area School
  • Lake Wangary Primary School
  • School of the Air (Kolendo, Coober Pedy, Bulgunnia Stations)
Total: More than 100 students

Session 3 – June 26

For our last session for 2009 we had one of the Crows midfield superstars Bernie Vince show his class. We started off with a “Bernie Vince Quiz” and to our amazement the majority of kids knew all about him. We managed to stump a few schools but not even Bernie knew the answers to those questions.

Schools from all around the state managed to ask Bernie everything from his training, diet and even his old SAPSASA coach reminded him of how he taught him everything he knows. In between the hard hitting questions the kids were shown video’s on the new 19th man concept and also what is included in the 2009 Crow’s Nest membership pack.

To finish the successful session off we had a signed guernsey to give away and the question was, how many games has Bernie Vince played for the Adelaide Football Club? And about 2 seconds later a school had given the correct answer of 43. The winner was no surprise with Stansbury PS (the home of Bernie Vince) collecting the guernsey.

School’s which participated:
  • Elizabeth North Primary School
  • Karkoo Primary School
  • Stansbury Primary School
  • Penong Primary School
  • Wirrabara Primary School
  • Williamstown Primary School
  • Playford Primary School
  • Mt Victor Station
Total: More than 250 student
