Junior Development

The Adelaide Football Club had an exceptional 2009 with many outstanding results. We successfully met our goal of increasing junior membership and the profile of the Club in the community, with the Crows in Schools program reaching over 75,000 children.

Sacred Heart training 2009

Adelaide had a change of scenery in the lead up to the round 10 clash against Hawthorn with a light session at Sacred Heart College.

Five of Sacred Heart’s 1st XVIII footballers – Tom Moten, Darcy Armfield, Jack Carter, Nick Homburg and Matt Hamilton – took part in training, watched by a large number of students at the school’s main oval.

After the 90 minute session Neil Craig took the opportunity to speak to 30 students while Andrew McLeod and Graham Johncock also spoke to eight of the school’s indigenous students about future career paths and making right lifestyle choices.

About 100 students were given the opportunity after training to get autographs and photos with the playing group. Jason Porplyzia, an ex-student of Sacred Heart then presented senior school Principal Paul Hine with a signed guernsey.

A message from Sacred Heart Principal, Paul Hine:

Many thanks for the organisation that went into the occasion and for the support of the Adelaide Football Club. While the presence of the Adelaide Crows and the training was a feature, the workshops held by Andrew, Graham and Neil with the students were outstanding. They presented positive and challenging information to the students and reinforced so many of the messages that we are trying to impart to them as part of the educational program. If you would pass on my thanks to the Club for their meaningful engagement in the lives of young people it would be genuinely appreciated.

Best wishes,

Paul

AFL Community Camp 2009

Adelaide had a successful two days on the Yorke Peninsula for its 2009 AFL Community Camp.

From June 15-16 the entire playing and coaching group spent time with the local community in schools and hospitals and conducting clinics.

The team split into two groups with one heading to the Lower Peninsula setting up camp at Yorketown and the other higher up at Kadina.

Over 600 kids participated at both the Kadina and Yorketown coaching clinics run by the players and Adelaide’s junior development team.

Kids were able to get up close to their favourite players and had the chance to get autographs. A highlight from the clinic was the opportunity to talk to Leigh Matthews via a video call in the Telstra Community Camp Hub.

Following the clinic, 16 local elite footballers were put through their paces by the Adelaide Crows coaching staff, an experience they will never forget.

The two day camp finished off with players visiting local schools and hospitals in the area which proved a great experience for both the playing group and the local community.
