Patrick Dangerfield’s big pack mark from Adelaide’s opening round clash with Geelong has been voted third in our Crows Marks of the Year countdown.

It was Adelaide’s first taste of Thursday night football at Simonds Stadium back in March, as the Crows opened their 2014 campaign on a balmy night in Victoria.

Dangerfield had been shadowed all evening by Geelong midfielder Cam Guthrie and was made to earn every single touch in the bruising Round One clash.

Adelaide led briefly at the beginning of the second quarter, but it was the Cats who held the advantage for much of the contest as the Crows trailed by six points late in the third stanza.

Geelong had already booted five goals for the term to keep Adelaide at bay. But, in his first game as vice-captain, Dangerfield took it upon himself to try and inspire his side into action.

Having already pushed hard into defence to support his teammates, Danger honed in on a high ball and split the pack on Geelong’s half-forward line, out-marking Brownlow Medallist Jimmy Bartel and tall target Mitch Brown in the process.

He repeated his heroics in the final quarter with the first major of the term and another telling defensive mark running back with the flight.

But it wasn’t enough to lift the Crows over the line, as the Cats piled on six goals of their own to run out 38-point winners.

Dangerfield finished with 21 possessions (17 contested), four clearances and two goals, earning two Brownlow votes for his performance.
