Turn back the clock and relive some of the Club's great draft stories with our new 'Draft Rewind' series, exclusive to afc.com.au.

Adelaide had to wait until the end of its second season in the AFL before entering the AFL’s National Draft for the first time.

After trading its first pick (No.11) to Hawthorn for Matthew Robran – who went on to play 130 games for the Crows including two premierships - Adelaide then drafted five South Australians.

Top of this 1992 group, picked at No.26, was outstanding Central District junior Martin McKinnon.

The wingman, who had only turned 17 four months earlier, was sitting a Year 12 history exam on the day of the draft.

McKinnon, the grandson of SANFL and Norwood Hall of Famer Sam Gallagher, made his AFL debut in 1994 and became a regular the following season. But after 25 games for the Crows he was involved in the complex trade deal used to secure Darren Jarman.

He then played 54 games in three years with Geelong and had two years with the Brisbane Lions (for seven games) before returning to Central District where he played in the club’s 2001 SANFL premiership.

But McKinnon was not the first player drafted by the Crows. There also was a mid-season draft in 1992 and Adelaide picked up Jim West, Andrew Geddes and Alan Schwartz (none of whom played an AFL game for the Crows).

Of the five National Draft selections, only McKinnon and Matthew Powell (16 games) represented the Crows while Sam Smart played one AFL game for Carlton in 1997.
