Crows captain Taylor Walker is closing in on the ‘Super-Boot’ crown after slotting a nine-point goal in Adelaide’s final 2015 NAB Challenge game against Port Adelaide.

Walker, 24, finished off a nice passage of play for his team in the opening quarter at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon. On the members-side wing, Tom Lynch played on quickly and kicked the ball to Walker, who was running into space on the half-forward flank.

The skilful forward baulked opponent Alipate Carlile and went inside onto his right foot, banging home Adelaide’s first goal from 55 metres out.

It was Walker’s fifth pre-season ‘Supergoal’, elevating him to equal-third in the AFL all-time. Former Crows teammate Simon Goodwin and current-day champions Brendon Goddard and Matthew Pavlich have also kicked five nine-point goals.

Former Essendon star Scott Lucas holds the record with seven ahead of long-kicking Melbourne half-back Paul Wheatley, who kicked the first-ever ‘Supergoal’ in the early-2000s.

Adelaide midfielder Rory Sloane had never kicked a nine-pointer prior to Saturday when he bagged two in the space of 10 minutes in the third quarter.

Sloane’s efforts from long range earned his junior club, Upwey-Tecoma, $1,000 worth of Sherrin footballs thanks to NAB. Walker’s junior club, North Broken Hill Bulldogs, will also receive $500 worth of fresh footballs.

Teammate Patrick Dangerfield said the two grass roots clubs would be rapt with the result.

“Upwey will certainly be happy with Sloaney. He was sensational today,” Dangerfield said.

“I know my junior footy club, Anglesea, was stoked when I kicked a super goal last year, so they’ll be a bit disappointed in me this year, I reckon.

“North Broken Hill will be a bit disappointed as well. I know ‘Tex’ got one for them today, but normally they have footy budget just about covered by this time of year!”

There have been a total of 31 ‘Supergoals’ kicked so far this pre-season, including one by another Crow, Nathan van Berlo, in the opening round.
