The NAB AFL Trade Period has officially kicked off with clubs able to finalise deals as of 10am on Monday.

With plenty of talk behind the scenes leading up to this week, three players – Patrick Dangerfield, Dean Gore and Jack Redden – changed clubs on day one.

As well, three players have been made offers using free agency with two, Matt Suckling and Scott Selwood, already making their way to the Western Bulldogs and Geelong respectively.

AFL.com.au's Trade Winds will provide a round-up of the latest movement every morning until the end of the Trade Period on Thursday October 22.

Carlisle clash

St Kilda and Essendon met on Monday to further discuss the prospect of Jake Carlisle moving to his preferred destination of Seaford.

But it doesn't appear he's any closer to a shift, with the Bombers determined to snare pick No.5 and the Saints equally as dogged about not using it in a direct swap for the key position player.

Trade Winds: Monday

The Age is reporting the Saints are looking at ways to turn their high selection into two first-round picks so they can spend one on Carlisle and maintain a presence high up the order.

Saints' chief operating officer Ameet Bains has been very careful with his language about pick No.5 so far, saying it wouldn't be used "directly " to snare Carlisle.

The Herald Sun has suggested the two clubs could be headed to mediation talks, as Essendon engaged in with Port Adelaide last year over Paddy Ryder.

Talia to Tullamarine?

With Carlisle leaving, the Bombers will be keen to bolster their key position stocks with an experienced player.

The Age says they've made enquiries about Western Bulldogs' backman Michael Talia, who is on the outer at the Kennel after being accused of leaking tactical details to his Adelaide-listed brother Daniel during the finals.

And, the same report suggests the Bombers have interest in young Dogs' midfielder Mitch Honeychurch.

The Dons officially made an offer to restricted free agent Matthew Leuenberger on Monday and now must wait and see if the Brisbane Lions match the deal to retain their ruckman.

It was reported on Monday that the Dons have agreed to send Jake Melksham to Melbourne for a second-round selection.

Richmond roadblocks

Like the traffic on Punt Road, talks stalled on Monday between Richmond and Carlton over Chris Yarran.

The Age says the Tigers won't trade their first round pick for the running half-back, with discussions failing to advance on the opening day.

But other clubs still believe Yarran is Richmond-bound, with Hawthorn cooling on having a crack at securing him.

Mystery also remains over the future of Ben Lennon. There was no interest registered from rival clubs on Monday but he remains unsigned.

However, the Tigers still want to retain him, along with David Astbury, and look set to secure Greater Western Sydney midfielder Jacob Townsend this week.

Roos' raid

North Melbourne aims to bolster its line up with experienced talent, having made bids for Jeremy Howe and Paul Seedsman.

The Herald Sun says the bold move could cost them Aaron Black, who remains set to leave, and possibly Ryan Bastinac.

Fremantle is big on Black, who is from Western Australia, and Bastinac has been linked to the Lions, while the Roos are open to trading their early picks (currently No.15 and No.34) to stock up on talent.

In other trade news:

  • The Herald Sun suggests Gold Coast could enter the race for Howe and Seedsman with more lucrative deals potentially on offer.
  • The Age says Collingwood is also interested in Howe.
  • The West Australian says the Sydney Swans' interest in West Coast ruckman Callum Sinclair is set to intensify with Leuenberger expected to join the Bombers.
  • The Australian believes the Eagles, who successfully traded for Jack Redden on Monday, are well advanced in talks to secure Swan Lewis Jetta, with Sinclair believed to be part of that swap.
