Crows SANFL coach Heath Younie says it’ll be a privilege to serve as an assistant coach in Sunday’s State Game against Victoria after missing the opportunity to represent South Australia as a player.
Younie’s playing career took him across three states, but it was his contribution in the SANFL that remains his biggest legacy.
Originally from Wodonga, Younie played representative football for Victoria Country as a junior before being rookie-listed by West Coast in 1997. The goalkicking midfielder played a State Game for Western Australia against Tasmania in 1999 during his second season on the Eagles’ list.
After a short stint back home in Victoria, Younie was then recruited by North Adelaide in 2001. He won two best and fairests, two leading goalkicker awards and was vice-captain of the club, but never featured at State level during his 183-game SANFL career.
Younie said he jumped at the opportunity to join the Croweaters coaching panel and give back to the state that gave him so much as a player.
“There’s such great history associated with State footy,” Younie said.
“I was lucky enough to play a State Game for Western Australia, but missed the opportunity to play one here for SA.
“It’ll be a privilege to be part of it as a coach this week. It’s such a fantastic opportunity to work alongside Graham Cornes and the rest of the coaching group, as well as some of the most talented footballers this state has to offer.
“It’s a special game to be involved in.”
State selectors finalised the 25-man squad on Monday, with a host of former Crows among those included as final preparations continue for Sunday’s clash at Adelaide Oval.
“We could have up to 17 debutants play this week, which is great for SA footy,” Younie said.
“In saying that, we’ve still got a number of experienced heads who know what State footy is all about. I think it’s a really strong, balanced squad with a good blend of youth and experience.
“Victoria’s obviously named a strong squad too. It should be a great contest between two quality sides.”
Sunday’s State Game against Victoria kicks off at 1.40pm at Adelaide Oval. A Live stream will be available via the SANFL’s official website and smartphone app. Radio station Life FM will also cover the clash.
SANFL club ticketed members and Adelaide Essential Crow members receive free entry to Sunday’s State Game.
