Troy Menzel will be monitored after suffering a concussion in Adelaide’s SANFL loss to Central District Saturday.

Menzel, 21, sustained the head knock in a tackle during the third quarter at Elizabeth. It was the promising forward’s second concussion of the season following a heavy clash in Round Five.

Crows General Manager of High Performance Brett Burton said the Club would take a conservative approach to Menzel’s recovery.

“Troy will go through the normal concussion protocols this week and get assessed,” Burton said.

“We’ll have some more information (on his availability) later in the week.”

Veteran Nathan van Berlo also requires further assessment after a flare up of a foot injury.

Van Berlo, who sat out the Club’s SANFL win over Norwood before the bye, experienced more discomfort in the second quarter on Saturday and didn’t return to the field.

“Nathan had some soreness around his plantar fascia injury,” Burton said.

“We’ll assess that in the next 24 – 48 hours and make a decision later in the week.”

Rookie Jonathon Beech was a late withdrawal from Adelaide’s SANFL team to play the Dogs because of quad soreness. Burton was optimistic the goalkicker would only miss one more game.

“We’ll look to settle that (soreness) down this week and build up Jono’s training load next week, to hopefully, be available next weekend,” Burton said.

Line-breaking recruits Paul Seedsman (hamstring) and Curtly Hampton (foot) could be available for selection as early as next week.

Hampton has been limited to one SANFL trial game this year because of a foot complaint, while Seedsman missed Thursday night’s AFL win over North Melbourne with a minor hamstring strain.

“Paul is progressing well from his hamstring injury. He’s continuing through his rehab plan and will look to be available either next week or the week after,” Burton said.

“Curtly is back training with the main group and is training well. We look forward to him getting a couple of strong weeks of training under his belt … and to be available, hopefully, next weekend.”

Young forward Riley Knight won’t play in the SANFL against North Adelaide on Saturday.

Knight, who has a nerve irritation in his ankle, will be assessed on a weekly basis.

Defender Sam Shaw will also continue to be assessed as he recovers from concussion symptoms.
