Several Crows are expected to poll strongly in the SANFL’s Magarey Medal count on Tuesday night.

Midfielder Cam Ellis-Yolmen is among the favourites ahead of this year’s count.

The 23-year-old averaged 29 possessions and seven clearances per match to be one of the League’s most consistent midfielders. Despite missing two matches through the home and away season, Ellis-Yolmen topped the SANFL for contested possessions (235), ranked second for hard-ball gets (85), was third in clearances (110).

Ellis-Yolmen should start the count strongly, with votes expected through Adelaide’s opening three wins over West Adelaide, Port Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens.

A standout 39-possession performance in the SANFL Crows’ 47-point win over Norwood should earn him best afield honours in Round 11, while Ellis-Yolmen was also the match-winner in Adelaide’s SANFL Showdown victory in Round 18 with 34 disposals and two crucial goals.

Mitch Grigg is a proven Magarey Medal vote-getter after leading the way for Adelaide in its first two seasons in the SANFL. He was also the Club’s top polling player while representing Norwood in 2013 before the introduction of Adelaide’s own SANFL side.

Grigg played every minor round game for the SANFL Crows, ranking equal-second for score assists (25), equal-third for inside 50ms (78), and also featuring within the top ten players in the League for disposals and contested possessions.

Somewhat inconsistent through the first half of the season, Grigg is likely to finish the count with a wet sail after a string of strong SANFL performances late in the year.

The left-footer torched Port Adelaide in Mannum in Round Two with 29 possessions and was again brilliant against the Magpies alongside Ellis-Yolmen in the Round 18 at Alberton with 35 possessions and nine clearances. He’ll vie with several teammates for the votes in Adelaide’s thrashing of West Adelaide in Berri in Round 21 after collecting 29 possessions and slotting three goals and could feature among the votes in several other matches.

Rookie Crow Hugh Greenwood could poll his first Magarey Medal votes after an impressive debut season with the SANFL Crows.

He deserves three votes for his 22-possession and three-goal game against Glenelg in Round Five and is also a chance to attract votes against North Adelaide in Round Seven.

Jonathon Beech is likely to poll in the opening game of the season against his former club West Adelaide, where he amassed 26 possessions and kicked three goals.

The 25-year-old should burst out of the blocks with potential votes against Port Adelaide in Round Two, Woodville-West Torrens in Round Three and Glenelg in Round Five. Injury hindered his progress mid-season, but look for more votes to head his way late in the year, particularly from his four-goal game against the Bloods in Berri in Round 21.

Young midfielder Harrison Wigg made great strides this season and should be rewarded with his first Magarey Medal votes on Tuesday evening.

Ruckman Reilly O’Brien asserted himself as one of the premiere big men in the comp and may also poll on the SANFL’s night of nights.

Defenders are often overlooked, but Andy Otten and Tom Doedee could pick up a few minor votes along the way.

Dual Magarey Medallist Joel Cross of South Adelaide is among the leading contenders once again for this year’s award. Former Crow Jared Petrenko, Port Adelaide’s Kane Mitchell (ineligible), Central District onballer Chris Jansen and 2014 winner Zane Kirkwood are all expected to poll strongly.

South Australian football’s most prestigious individual honour, the Magarey Medal has been awarded since 1898 to recognise the SANFL’s fairest and most brilliant player of the premiership season.

Some of football’s biggest names have won the award, including Barrie Robran, Malcolm Blight and Garry McIntosh. Several former Crows also have a Magarey tucked away in the trophy cabinet, including Andrew Jarman, Greg Anderson and Brad Symes.

Current Crows development coach Paul Thomas also claimed a Magarey Medal with Central District back in 2004.

The South Australian Football Hall of Fame presentation with precede the count and can be streamed live on the SANFL’s official website from 7pm.

Live coverage of the 2016 Magarey Medal count begins at 9pm on Tuesday on 7Mate.
