It had been a while since Jack Gunston played in weather similar to Friday night’s in Alice Springs, but he enjoyed every minute.

Gunston became the latest draftee to put on the Crows guernsey in Adelaide’s NAB Challenge match with Collingwood.

In some of the worst conditions seen in an AFL game Gunston kicked two opportunist soccer goals in the first and second quarters in an encouraging performance.

Speaking in the rooms after the game the 2009 draftee admitted the weather made for a tough slog.

“The rain just got harder and harder throughout the game and there were pools of water everywhere and we were slipping and sliding, so it was scrappy game,” said Gunston, Adelaide’s second pick in the 2009 national draft.

“It was taxing on the legs but that’s alright, I haven’t played in those conditions for a while.

“I think I got the pace of the game pretty well. Obviously I was a bit starstruck when I first ran out and then it started pouring down.

“The boys were good; I managed to kick my first goal in a few minutes which was good. It was great team unity out there and they made me feel really comfortable and their help around contests just made it a lot easier for me.”

Gunston found himself in the right place at the right time reading the play well and kicking two similar goals in the first half.

His two soccer efforts close to goal helped Adelaide back into the contest each time and he was pleased to get on the board early.

“You always feel a bit better and get confidence when you kick a few goals,” he said.

“I was stoked with them and no matter how you get them at least you get them so I was really happy.”

Gunston was among a few new faces to the team that played Port Adelaide two weeks ago, with Jarrhan Jacky along with Thompson, Bock and Tippett also in the side.

After spending a week in the Gold Coast for a training camp Gunston was pleased to be able to get the opportunity again to travel with the team.

“Yeah it’s a bit of fun coming up and spending more time with the boys and bonding with them and what not.

“They have been really good to me and made it a lot easier for me in my first game.”
