Riley was made to wait almost a full 12 months between AFL games despite his strong SANFL form. A broken arm dented the hard-nosed onballer’s chances of an earlier recall. He returned to the side for five matches late in the season, collecting a career-best 17 possessions and a goal against Gold Coast in Round 23.

The former NSW Scholarship holder was selected to make his AFL debut in caretaker coach Mark Bickley’s first game in charge in round 19 and went on to play another four matches. An exceptional clearance player, the uncompromising 19-year-old impressed with his hardness at the contest and strong defensive action. Elevated to the senior list for season 2012, Riley is working on his endurance with the hope of cementing a regular spot in the Crows midfield.
