Debut: v Fremantle, round 16, 2003
Recruited from: West Adelaide (SA)
Brownlow Votes: 9

A remarkably consistent season from the veteran, who finished top-10 in the Crows Club Champion award. Rutten continued to play a leading role in Adelaide’s back six, nullifying his direct opponents and mentoring his younger teammates at the same time. The reliable defender reached the 200-game milestone in round six. Rewarded with a one-year contract extension.

Season by Season

Defied a severely interrupted pre-season to play every game in 2012. Rutten relinquished the role as Adelaide’s No.1 defender to NAB Rising Star Daniel Talia partway through the season, but showed he could still match it with the best forwards in the competition when Talia was struck down with injury in the first week of finals. The reliable veteran held in-form Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich to one goal in the Semi-Final and battled manfully against Hawthorn superstar Lance Franklin in the Preliminary Final. Turns 30 this season.

Season by Season

The ever-reliable key defender had another outstanding year in 2011 and was rewarded for his consistency, finishing equal-third in the Crows Club Champion award. The All Australian full-back regularly stood the opposition’s most dangerous forward in a back six depleted by injuries and retirement and was rarely beaten. His remarkable run of 80 consecutive games came to an end in round 21 when he was ruled out through illness, but his durability remained a feature, averaging more minutes on the field than any other player in the competition.
