The uncompromising small forward put an injury-ravaged three years behind him to play 23 games in 2012 and become an integral part of the Adelaide line-up. Nicknamed the ‘human cannonball’, Petrenko set the tone with his attack on the body and the ball, and relished performing shutdown roles on the opposition’s best attacking defenders. Petrenko was included in the Club’s ‘emerging leaders’ group prior to the season, and also committed to the Club by signing a new deal.

Petrenko had a breakout year in his fourth season at West Lakes, playing 15 games and having an impact in the midfield and forward line. The gutsy 21-year-old inspired teammates with his ferocity at the contest and defensive pressure, as evidenced by his performance against the Sydney Swans in round 15, where he laid a career-high eight tackles and kicked a match-defining goal.
