2010 season:
Petrenko played mainly as a small forward in 2010 with small stints in defence. In his 12 games he collected 139 possessions, 38 marks and kicked six goals. He had a season high 17 possessions against North Melbourne in round eight. He provided great energy and defensive pressure in Adelaide’s forward 50, but was dropped for round 13 and was unable to regain his place in Adelaide’s side. Petrenko believes with extra fitness and an eye on a place in defence, he can become a regular in Adelaide’s 22. "It was hard last year," he said. "I was playing with Taylor Walker, Kurt Tippett, Patty Dangerfield, Jason Porplyzia and also Brett Burton when he was fit, so I was the fifth or six option in attack and that made it pretty hard, especially for someone who's never played that forward role. I'm eyeing off a defensive position this year because last season guys like Matty Jaensch and Ricky Henderson really stepped up and did a good job in the forward line. I'll be fitter again than this year, so hopefully I can play a few more stints in the midfield too."

David Noble’s 2010 review:
“The defensive side of his game and his attack on the ball is second-to none, but he probably wasn't able to complete enough offensive work and get enough shots on goal and that got him out of the side. We're a little bit undecided where his best position is. It might be the back pocket or through that half-back line. He runs and carries really well and is super competitive and there's always room for those guys in your side.”

Career:
Selected in the 2007 rookie draft, Petrenko was elevated to the senior list in Round 17 2008 in place of injured ruckman Rhett Biglands. He put an interrupted pre-season behind him to hold down a league spot with the Eagles while coming very close to making his AFL debut. He was named as an emergency on four consecutive occasions and was on the verge of making his Crows debut in round 20. Petrenko made his AFL debut in round one 2009 against Collingwood and impressed many with his performance. He had 15 disposals, four marks and kicked a goal in the narrow win. He went on to play the next seven games, was dropped but regained selection in round 12. He was unable to break back into the side though for the rest of the year but again produced solid performances in the SANFL for the Eagles.
