2010 season:
Nathan van Berlo missed three games at the start of 2010 due to a lower back injury. He returned to the side in round five and continued to be an important cog in Adelaide’s defence and midfield. He was in the umpires votes in the round nine win over Brisbane, with 29 possessions and six marks. He had another standout performance in round 14 against Essendon, collecting 27 disposals. In the round 20 win against Brisbane he was the acting captain and stood up to seal the game for Adelaide. With only a minute left in the game, van Berlo ran the length of the ground to mark and goal from 45m on a tight angle to take the margin to seven points. It was a pivotal moment van Berlo, and in 2011 he will be the sixth player to captain the Adelaide Football Club. He was voted in by his teammates in December 2010, succeeding the retired Simon Goodwin. van Berlo has been a member of the leadership group since 2008 and had been touted as a future leader of the club. "It's a great honour to captain this club. I'm excited about leading the group into a new era. I'm also pleased to be involved with this leadership group and firmly believe that together we can drive the group towards success. We can't wait for the season to start."

David Noble’s 2010 review:
“VB tackled his own form head on. He was really strong in the way he wanted to deliver his own performances and it didn't matter where he played - he's one of those guys that says, 'put me out there and I'll play at a level that I know is going to beat my opponent and add to the team'. He's unconditional in the way he goes about his performance and that's just VB in a nutshell.”

Career:
van Berlo was drafted by the Crows in 2004. That season he had captained the West Perth Colts team, represented Western Australia in the NAB AFL under-18 championships, was named in the WAFL Colts team of the year and starred in testing at the AFL draft camp. Van Berlo debuted in 2005 and played just 11 games. He missed five games in 2006 due to a broken collarbone but was a part of Adelaide’s finals campaign. He played every game in 2007 cementing his place in Adelaide’s 22. In 2008 van Berlo emerged as one of Adelaide’s most prolific ball winners with 225 kicks and 251 handballs, including a career high 40 possessions against Carlton in round 18. Van Berlo played a slightly different role in 2009, used predominantly across half back and on a wing. His elite fitness and running power was an asset coming out of defence and he was able to perform well when used through the midfield. His effort on Adam Goodes in the second half of the round 13 clash with Sydney was one of his best as he nullified the Brownlow Medallist’s influence while gathering 21 disposals and two goals himself. van Berlo suffered a back injury in the last game of the season and was not able to return for Adelaide’s finals campaign.
