McKernan had a strong learning year in 2011, adding 16 games to his career tally. The 196cm utility impressed as both a key-position forward and back-up ruckman in the early part of the season and also showcased his versatility in the latter rounds, being moved to defence. McKernan hauled in a career-high eight marks against Hawthorn in round one.
David Noble: “Shaun’s form when he first came into the team was really sound. It probably dropped away in the middle-part of the year, but when he came back in and played in defence he performed some traits that suggested he could play at either end of the ground as well as in the ruck. He's got a fair bit to learn in regards to making good decisions and not trying to do too much with the ball too early, but we love his versatility. He's exciting in the options he gives us.”
