Known for his distinctive curly blond hair, Harry Dear will be sporting a new look this week and it’s all for a cause close to his heart.

The 20-year-old is shaving his head to raise funds and awareness of bowel cancer after losing his aunty and godmother Nicky Richardson in April after a three year battle with the disease.

Dear said the inspiration for the fundraising shave came from his younger brother Calsher who, along with the rest of the family, was deeply affected by the loss of Nicky and was looking for a way to help.

“Calsher’s only 11-years-old and he’s big on his hair so when he came up with the idea I wanted to support him as well as do something to support my aunty’s family and ensure this doesn’t happen to other families in the future,” Dear said.

“Nicky was only 44 when she passed away and with a young family still to raise, she has three daughters aged six, seven and eight, she had the rest of her life ahead of her. Being so young, and because she lived a healthy life, getting bowel cancer was the last thing anyone expected to happen to her.

“Together Calsher and I are hoping to raise $10,000 to go specifically towards research to hopefully stop this happening to other young people in the future. We’re also hoping to promote increased awareness during June – which is the official Bowel Cancer Australia awareness month.”
