Adelaide defender Daniel Talia has taken young Crow Fischer McAsey under his wing.

Now in his 10th AFL season, the dual All Australian backman told AFC Media he was taking on more of a quasi-coaching role with the young backs.

“It’s been really enjoyable for me to teach young Fish,” Talia said.

“The little things that remind me of when I was young as a junior… trying to learn off Truck (Ben Rutten), it’s the same situation.

“If he can have played 200 games in 10 years, my job is done.

“It’s brought some enthusiasm to my game as well, it’s been really enjoyable.”

For McAsey, it has been a chance to learn from one of the premier defenders in the game.

“Just following footy growing up, you look up to someone like Tals,” McAsey said.

“You know they’re really good players, so it was a surreal moment for him to present me with my Round One guernsey.

“He caught up with me for lunch early on and talked me through what he does and how he goes about it.

“In terms of preparation, he’s one of the most diligent players at the Club.”

Coach Matthew Nicks has already noticed similarities between the key defenders.

“They’re real thinkers of the game, good football intelligence,” Nicks said.

“You often see them sitting together and talking through it, sliding magnets around.

“We’ve pretty much got an extra coach there in Tals.”
