For Adelaide leader Ben Keays, taking to the field during the AFL's ANZAC Appeal Round will always be special.

The significance of the Anzac spirit has never been lost on the 27-year-old, as he grew up learning about the story of his Great Grandfather, Fred Keays, a veteran of both World Wars and a League footballer for Collingwood and Fitzroy.

In the lead up to this weekend's special round, Keays told AFC Media Anzac Day was an opportunity for him to reflect on his family's contribution and commemorate all who had served.

“It (Anzac Round) means a lot to me personally due to having lots of family members serve, but the main one that has gained traction over the last few years is my great grandfather,” Keays said.

“He (Fred) served in both World Wars and in between played some footy for Collingwood and Fitzroy, so learning about that story has been awesome and I’m starting to get asked more and more questions about it.

“I find my great grandfather’s story and the Anzac spirit very inspiring, it gives me a lot of perspective and keeps me grounded both in footy and general life.

“It’s such a privilege to live in Australia in 2024, and a lot of that is built off the people in their teens and early 20s who went off and fought those wars, so it is very important to respect that in day-to-day life.”

This weekend’s clash will hold extra significance for Keays, who is set to form part of the team that will don Adelaide’s first Anzac guernsey

He said it would be a proud moment to run out with the specially-designed guernsey on.

“Growing up watching the Collingwood and Essendon game was a highlight, and just appreciating the connection between footy and war, I’ve always found it fascinating,” Keays said.

“A lot of footy players served back in the day, so to be able to carry on that legacy in such a special round is something I hold very dear.

“This year will be extra special as we get to wear an Anzac jumper for the first time in the Club’s history.

“The jumper will be a souvenir both my family and I will hold very closely for many years to come, and I can’t wait to hopefully do it proud in Hobart this weekend.”

Adelaide plays North Melbourne in the AFL's ANZAC Appeal Round at Blundstone Arena on Saturday at 2.30pm.
