Adelaide’s SANFL side suffered its first defeat of the 2025 State League season, going down to Woodville West-Torrens by 21 points at Woodville Oval on Sunday afternoon.
The Crows had their opportunities, but wayward kicking ultimately cost them, leading to the Eagles' 14.6 (90) to 9.15 (69) victory.
Here are the five key takeaways from the match.
Draper clocks in twice
Midfielder Sid Draper played his first SANFL game in the tri-colours and was effective by foot and hand, while having strong connection with his teammates.
It was Draper’s second game of the weekend, having come on as the sub in the final term of Adelaide’s AFL match against Fremantle on Friday night.
The first-year Crow looked fresh from the opening bounce, highlighted by amassing 13 disposals in the first quarter with his trademark running ability on display.
“He was one that was able to come out and put in a shift today and I thought he was really impressive,” SANFL Senior Coach Matthew Wright said.
“We know what attributes he’s got with his ability and speed around stoppage, and I thought he brought that today.”
Draper had 28 disposals, four marks, eight clearances and six inside 50s.
McAndrew brings the intensity
Ruckman Lachlan McAndrew continued his strong form, giving Adelaide’s midfielders first-use, with the Crows recording 17 more clearances.
McAndrew made his impact felt the longer the game progressed, beating his direct opponent both in the hit-outs and around the ground.
“He’s playing really consistent footy for us, he prepares really diligently and does all his opposition analysis, so he knows what he is up against each week,” Wright said.
“He brings the intensity around the contest and I thought he was really solid again today.”
McAndrew finished with 16 disposals, five tackles, 37 hit-outs and eight clearances.
Berry influential
On-baller Sam Berry was impactful both in the middle and when up forward, as he continued to develop his versatility.
Playing as a forward, Berry made the most of his chances, kicking two majors, and Wright was pleased with how he went in the role.
“He is a big bull around the stoppage, and we’ve seen what he can do there, but to go forward and impact, it just adds another string to his bow for AFL level,” he said.
“He has been a really high-level contributor for some time now, but it’s about how we can continue to evolve his game and playing him up forward for periods of time is going to help him in that aspect.”
Berry collected 26 touches, five tackles, five clearances and five inside 50s.
Tahana stands strong
Adelaide Development player Stephen Tahana stood tall in defence for the Crows, playing on both the Eagles' key and small forwards effectively.
Tahana competed for all four quarters, never giving up, highlighted by laying a massive tackle in the final minutes of the game to stop the Eagles from running into an open goal square.
“You’d struggle to find too many clips where he does get beat one-on-one,” Wright said.
“His ability to execute consistently over a long period of time, he is a really important player for us and one that our AFL listed players can learn off of.”
Tahana finished with 12 disposals, three marks and three frees for.
Pair of experience Crows give their all
Harry Schoenberg and Lachlan Murphy battled hard against the Eagles, doing all they could to get the momentum back on Adelaide’s term.
Wright was impressed with the intensity they brought from the opening bounce.
“The game wasn’t on our terms for large chunks, but that didn’t deter their attitude or effort around the footy,” Wright said.
“They are two that can walk off today knowing they put in a shift and did all they could to help us try and win that game.”
Schoenberg finished with 21 touches, six clearances and a goal, while Murphy amassed 25 disposals, four tackles and four inside 50s.
Adelaide’s SANFL side will next play Norwood at Centenary Oval on Sunday in Port Lincoln, with the first bounce at 2pm.
