Adelaide's chief executive Andrew Fagan has backed skipper Taylor Walker in his ability to lead the side, quoting words of support from vice-captain Rory Sloane.

Speaking on Triple M on Sunday, Fagan responded to public criticism of Walker’s captaincy.

“I’m not sure where it comes from to be fair and it’s been ordinary on more than one occasion throughout the season,” he said.

“I heard an interview Sloaney was doing and he said it best in commenting how strong a leader Tex is and when you’re inside the four walls that’s what you see.”

He said there was more to being a leader than a player’s on-field performance.

“His season’s been hard for him – he hasn’t been at 100 per cent at any point throughout the year so it’s been hard for him to lead by example on the oval but leadership’s more than that,” he said.

“It (leadership) is about playing well and being a part of it and he has a body of work that says he does that but it’s not just that, it’s what happens all around the football club and that’s why he’s so respected by his fellow players, peers in the competition and by me and others.”

As for Tex retaining the captaincy, Fagan said the Club would make a decision early next year.

“It’s a decision we make every year, we’ll make it again in the early part of next year, but he’s a really important part of our leadership group and I think the criticism has been wildly unfair.”

The skipper underwent surgery on Monday to repair the plantar fascia in his left foot and is expected to fit for the start of pre-season training.
