Building relationships with people is the most important part of leadership, according to Crows captain Taylor Walker.

Walker, who was last year voted by his peers as the AFL’s best captain, has spoken exclusively to The Crows Show ahead of Sunday’s season premiere on Channel Seven.

During the interview, the inspirational skipper reveals what he thinks makes a good leader.

“Building relationships is number one,” Walker said.

“Being able to understand different sorts of characters and the way they tick is number one and key to having a successful leadership role.

“You look back three or four years ago when Phil (Walsh) asked me to be captain I was pretty reluctant to take on the role but I’ve quietly really enjoyed the last three or four years.”

The 26-year-old said he has had great support from the Club’s Senior Leadership Group (SLG).

Adelaide’s SLG has a different look to it this year with the inclusion of Tom Lynch and Eddie Betts.

“They always bring a bit of fun, they bring views and opinions from different angles and they are both experienced players,” Walker said.

Adelaide has had two successful years under Walker’s guidance making finals in both 2015 and 2016, but he wants more.

“You look at the year just been 2016, 16 wins most of the time would get you top four but it wasn’t to be,” Walker said.

“It just goes to show how even the competition is.

“Hopefully we can continue to improve as a footy club and do a little bit better than we did last year.”
