The Bond brothers are “honoured” to be the image on the Variety Showdown Shield, which was unveiled on Tuesday ahead of Showdown 44 this weekend.

Troy played 58 games for Adelaide, including the 1997 Premiership, while younger brother Shane played 57 games for Port Adelaide.

They were involved in a famous moment in 1997, when they hugged after the siren in the second ever Showdown.

That photo already has a great legacy, but now even more so as the centerpiece of the new Shield.

“It’s very humbling [to be on the Shield], it’s great and something the family will look back on with pride,” Troy said.

“It’s a great picture, I’ve got it at home and Mum and Dad have a picture of it at home too.

“It puts footy in perspective; yes, you go out and play it hard, but at the end of the day it’s not the end of the world whether you win or lose, it’s about enjoying it.”

In that 1997 game, Port Adelaide was in front for most of the game until Troy put Adelaide ahead with a late goal. The Crows held on for a thrilling win.

Shane said Troy was one of the first people he saw after the siren went.

“I remember Troy with this big, cheesy smile on his face, but I couldn’t help but have a smile back,” Shane said.

“He gave me a hug after the game and I remember the next day the image was in the paper and I had a lot of people ring me and say how much they loved the photo.

“To have my kids, my parents, the community and my relatives see that [on the shield], I feel really proud.”
