Crows veteran Scott Thompson says he isn’t approaching this year as his last.

The two-time Club Champion, who is out of contract at the end of the season, remains passionate about the game but says, ultimately, form will determine his long-term future.

“I still see some footy left in me,” Thompson said on Friday.

“If I wasn’t enjoying it, I wouldn’t be sitting here right now. I guess it’s up to me and how I perform, but in saying that it’s not about me really. As long as we’re performing as a side and I’m playing my role, the Club will hopefully see a role for me going forward.

“Hopefully, I can start the season well and we’ll go from there.”

Thompson, who turns 32 in March, enjoyed another consistent season in 2014.

He ranked top three at the Club in possessions, tackles and hard-ball gets, and was 16th in the competition for clearances despite missing three games.

The All Australian has been on a modified program this summer as he recovers from minor, post-season knee surgery.

Thompson will resume full training within a fortnight, and said the operation won’t affect his preparations for Round One.

“I’m probably lucky, to a certain extent, that I’ve got a number of years behind me,” he said.

“I’ve got that fitness base, so I can probably pick it up a bit quicker than other guys.”

Thompson said the players had embraced Phil Walsh’s coaching style and were already seeing benefits on the track.

“He’s a really likeable sort of guy (and) he’s a funny character, but he’s intense with our training and we expect elite standards.” Thompson said.

“We are still ramping up that competitiveness within the group - that’s one thing we’ve got a high focus on at this point in time.

“With a new coach also comes a slightly different game plan and different terminology with the way we speak and want to do things. That’s still a learning process for the boys.”

Thompson didn’t buy into the contract talk surrounding fellow midfielders Rory Sloane and Patrick Dangerfield. But he did break some news about the latter, revealing Dangerfield had followed Sloane in getting engaged over the break.

“They (Sloane and Dangerfield) both just signed a form of contract that’ll, hopefully, last them a lifetime in getting engaged over the Christmas period,” Thompson said.

“They’ll probably both need a new footy contract after the rocks the put on their girl’s fingers!”
