Development player Matthew Spencely has been rewarded for his consistency and commitment to Adelaide’s SANFL team, winning the prestigious Dean Bailey Award.

The former South Adelaide junior was outstanding in his debut season of League football.

Spencely was the only development-listed Crow to play all 18 SANFL games, averaging 14 possessions, three marks and just under a goal a game.

The 21-year-old onballer was second in the team for inside 50ms and score assists, behind only veteran Ian Callinan in both areas, and ranked third for the SANFL Crows in total disposals.

Spencely earned a SANFL Star Search nomination for his best-on-ground performance against Central District in Round 13, when he amassed a season-high 28 possessions and kicked two goals.

He also managed five games with local club Kangarilla in the Hills Football League and kicked 15 goals for the Double Blues, including a bag of eight against Sedan Cambrai.

Measuring 179cm and 70kg, Spencely often matched and outpointed opponents beyond his weight division with his strong work ethic, classy skills and sound decision-making.

Adelaide was well served at SANFL level by a number of talented footballers from across the state through its development program.

Luke Carey, Sam Pfeiffer, Brock Castree, Josh Wittwer and Charlie Molyneux were among 19 players from the Club’s development squad who represented the SANFL Crows in 2015.

The Dean Bailey Award was coined in honour of the late Strategy and Innovations coach as a tribute to his passion for nurturing young footballers. The award is judged on on-field performance, dedication to training and overall commitment to the team.

Mannum’s Michael O’Malley won the inaugural Dean Bailey Award in 2014.
