Rookie Hugh Greenwood will wear No.20 in his first year at West Lakes.

Greenwood, 23, retired from a promising basketball career to sign with Adelaide as a Category B rookie in September.

Greenwood wasn’t able to retain the No.3, which he wore in a highly successful US College stint with the University of New Mexico Lobos. However, there remains a basketball connection with No.20, which is currently worn by Greenwood’s former Lobos teammate, Tony Snell, at the Chicago Bulls.

The No.20 jumper at Adelaide was most recently owned, but not worn in a game for premiership points by another Tasmanian, Sam Siggins. Josh Jenkins, who is also a basketball convert, was the last Crows player to wear No.20 in an official match. Jenkins played 11 games in the jumper before switching to No.4 ahead of the 2013 season.

Premiership ruckman Aaron Keating famously wore No.20 in the 1997 Grand Final win over St Kilda in only his third senior appearance.

Another big man Ivan Maric, who is now at Richmond, played 77 games for Adelaide in No.20 while Tyson Stenglein reached the 100-game milestone (106) before joining West Coast. John Klug, who played 34 AFL games, was the first-ever Crows player to wear the guernsey.

Greenwood has been hard at work over the break completing a ‘mini pre-season’ before the official start of training for 1-4 year players on Monday, November 23.

A talented junior footballer, the left-footed forward represented Tasmania as a ‘bottom-age’ player at the Under-16 National Championships before accepting a basketball scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport, which ended his football playing days.

Greenwood has exceptional sporting pedigree.

His late grandfather, Peter Marquis, played in three consecutive VFL premierships with Melbourne (1955-57) in his 99 games, and also represented Victoria. His mother, Andree, also played basketball as does his younger sister, Josie, who is a member of the University of New Mexico Lobos women’s team. His father, Michael, played water polo for Australia.

Greenwood is the third player to receive his new jumper number for Season 2016. Earlier in the week, it was revealed Riley Knight will move from No.39 to No.3, while trade period recruit Dean Gore will don No.36.
