Remember when the boundary rider carried a weather station? This and other observations and notes from watching another replay of Adelaide's first game 25 years ago ...

Lead-up

Get some Hawk on Your Fork.  Brilliant banner.

Here we go, here we go, Camry Crows.  No so brilliant theme song but it kept Toyota very happy.

Mullets, short shorts, moustaches. Okay, might look a bit funny now but in 1991 it was the norm. In another 20 years we will laugh at today’s looks.

Commentators Sandy Roberts, Don Scott and Ian Robertson. At least Sandy was an SA boy.

Boundary roamer Max Stevens with his portable weather machine. Funny.

Andrew Jarman, with long sleeves, socks pulled up over his over knees, struts past younger brother and Hawk Darren. Wish Fud wasn’t a Hawk for six years.

First term

After 90 seconds, Peter McIntyre kicks into the man on the mark shooting for Adelaide’s first goal, “Disgraceful stuff,” says Robbo.

Hot holding the ball call against John Platten and Tony McGuinness kicks Crows’ first goal after four minutes.

Forgot how solid Jason Dunstall was. And what Matthew Robran looked like with a mop of blonde hair. He will look much better in a Crows guernsey.

Team runners wearing lime green trackie pants.

The Crow throw!

We don’t love the current 50 metre rule but some blokes got away with plenty on the mark back in 1991.

First-gamer Nigel Smart, with hair, takes on Dunstall.

More boos for Darren Jarman. That will change one day!

How good was John Klug?

Hawthorn makes its first interchange late in the first quarter. Rotation was not a word in 1991.

The first kick-out after a behind is a long bomb to a pack.

Hawthorn kicks its first goal after 20 minutes to trail by 25 points. “The Hawks are a mean fighting machine, they’ll come back,” warns Sandy.

Super sub Eddie Hocking comes on for the Crows.

Quarter-time it’s 6.2 to 2.0. “They are getting a standing ovation at quarter time,” says Sandy.

Second term

Simon Tregenza shows off his bouncing style - two hands, head down.

Dermott gets grumpy, throws Tom Warhurst  to the ground.

Klug gets his third. “Matthew Robran really has to tighten up,” says Scott. Or come back to Adelaide.

Thirty-year-old David Marshall is everywhere.

Dermie cops it from the crowd when he goes to the bench.

Remember when ruckmen had 20 metre run-ups at the centre bounce?

You may also remember lots of kicks to contests. But forgotten about the turnovers.

Hawthorn full back Chris Langford launches a torp. Will the screwie make a comeback in 2011?

Look away handball from Klug, McGuinness spins once, twice, goals on the right foot. 72-21 on the edge of half-time.

Third term

McIntyre boots his fourth, followed by more from Bruce Lindner and Darren Smith.

Smith sticks the ball in Andy Collins’ face but misses the goal.

Hocking takes hanger over Langford, then dodges Kennedy but kicks a point.

Suddenly it’s 98-37. “This is the most parochial crowd I have ever heard. All they do is cheer their own,” moans Scott. Can’t remember any opposition  supporter cheering us.

Scott Lee to Smart, to Lee, to Jarman, to Tregenza, to Klug, to Darel Hart to Hocking to Maynard. Goal!

Marshall shepherd on Collins. These days would have meant a holiday.

McGuinness again,111-44.  “And the Crows fans are out of their tree,” says Robbo.

Last quarter

Robran limps off after one of those 20 metre run-ups at the centre bounce.

Captain Chris McDermott crunched by Brereton and Dear. Fight!  Play goes on. Then an ump runs up to Dermie and spins him around to look at his number.

McDermott on stretcher, Rod Jameson finally comes off the bench for the first time.

D. Jarman runs in to an open goal and hits the post. Crowd cheers.  Almost as loud as when he bagged six in the 1997 grand final.

“He’s only dazed,” Stevens says of McDermott. Bone still can’t remember the game.

The procession continues.  204 cm Negri takes a run and a bounce, gives off to Jameson, to Lindner to Hart. 124-54.

A Jarman, Lindner and Klug keep the scoreboard ticking over. “And the Crows continue on their merry way,” says Sandy.

Smart not very happy when an A. Jarman free gives Dunstall his second goal.

Siren goes and Lindner finishes it off with his fourth, 155-69.

86 points .... the premiership cup is coming to Adelaide!

Actually, it went to Hawthorn
