Eddie Betts knows how to kick goals from the Adelaide Oval pockets but his wise advice was not needed by Ebony Marinoff on Sunday.

The promising SA women’s midfielder kicked the matchwinning goal against NSW/ACT right in front of Crows goalsneak Betts, who was watching from the players’ race and tried to assist the 18-year-old with a tip to use the checkside kick from an awkward angle in the forward pocket.

Marinoff didn’t hear or see the recommendation but the former surf lifesaver calmly steered a left foot drop punt through the goals to put SA back in front late in the final quarter of the AFL exhibition game, a curtainraiser to Adelaide’s AFL clash with St Kilda.

“I had no idea of Eddie showing me how to kick the ball,” Marinoff said.

“Lucky for me it was a left pocket so just kicked a drop punt. I would love Eddie to show me a banana kick from his pocket one day, though!”

SA did not kick a goal in the second and third terms of the State game but only trailed by nine points at three quarter-time.

A goal to key forward Lexi Edwards reduced the margin and then Marinoff’s chance to put SA in front came after she received a 50m penalty.

“We’ve been working since February and we’ve done it, we’ve showed it, and done South Australia proud,” Marinoff told Fox Footy after the exciting finish.
