Crows forward Jenna McCormick will continue to juggle both football and soccer this summer, with the dual-code athlete being offered a half-season contract to play for Brisbane Roar in the W-League.

The 24-year-old will move to Brisbane this weekend and will train and play with the Roar for the rest of the calendar year, before returning to Adelaide at Christmas to commence pre-season training for the Crows.

It will be the first time McCormick will be available for Round One of the AFLW season, with her committment to the W-League ruling her out in previous years.

Given McCormick’s passion for both sports, she is pleased that the two clubs could accommodate her playing in both competitions again.

“It was really hard for me to think about deciding between the sports this year,” McCormick said.

“I didn’t want to give up either, but I knew that it was coming to a point where I would have to, given the overlap.

“Playing a full season of soccer and missing out on footy at the start of the season, I didn’t really want to do it again, I wanted to play a full season and give it more of a crack.

“That’s why the half-season works out really well for me, I still get to have my foot in both and enjoy playing both.”

Crows General Manager Football Administration Phil Harper said the Club is glad that McCormick is still able to pursue both sports.

“It is really important for the Club to continue to support AFLW players who want to participate in multiple sports,” Harper said.

“We are pleased with how this has worked out for Jenna and that she will continue to have the opportunity to excel in both soccer and football.”

It has been a different off-season than normal for McCormick, who usually travels overseas to play soccer during Australia’s winter months.

This year, she stayed in Adelaide and played for the Northern Territory Thunder in the VFLW, as well as working part-time in the membership department at the Crows.

Her time in Adelaide and playing in the VFLW helped sway her decision to play a full season of Australian Rules in 2019.

“I really enjoyed playing footy in the VFL, really enjoyed being around the girls a little bit more as well,” McCormick said.

“I’m not going away and being a stranger when I come back, so it’s been great to build relationships and friendships and that certainly played a part in me wanting to pursue footy for a full season this year.

“I’ve improved and experienced different positions as well, so it is exciting to have that behind me and go into the season coming.”

Though McCormick will be 100 percent focused on soccer when she is up in Brisbane, she will take a football with her to keep up her skills.

She believes it will be easy to switch back to footy mode once she returns at Christmas.

“It’s always good to be in the elite environment for a long period of time, regardless of what sport you are in,” she said.

“The skills are always transferable and the mindset is transferable as well.

“It’s a matter of changing the literal physical skills of one sport to the other, which is really handy.”

The AFLW pre-season will commence in November.
