The Crows will go into Thursday night's game against Geelong as named, with young midfielder Jarryd Lyons to start as the substitute.

David Mackay, Lewis Johnston and Mitch Grigg will start on the interchange bench.

The Cats have made a late change, with ruckman Dawson Simpson replacing midfielder George Horlin-Smith. Tall utility Mark Blicavs will start as their sub.

On Wednesday night, Adelaide named Brad Crouch to play his first AFL game of the year.

Crouch, 20, had a modified pre-season program because of an Achilles complaint. The 2013 Rising Star runner-up didn’t feature in any of Adelaide’s AFL pre-season games, but amassed 38 possessions and six tackles in the Club’s SANFL trial match against Sturt a fortnight ago.

“Crouchy had a bit of an interrupted pre-season, but he’s ready to go now,” Sanderson said.

“He was very good in our State League game against Sturt. We saw last year what he can do at AFL level. He’s a quality young player and it’s great to have him back in the team.”

Recruits Eddie Betts and James Podsiadly will both play their first games for premiership points in Crows colours.

A two-time leading goalkicker at Carlton, Betts joined the Crows as a Free Agent at the end of last season. He kicked five goals in his pre-season debut for Adelaide last month. Ironically, Podsiadly’s first game for the Crows will be against former team, Geelong. The mobile key forward played 83 games for the Cats including the 2011 premiership.

“Our fans have had a glimpse of Eddie and ‘Pods’ in the pre-season games,” Sanderson said.

“They’re going to be great additions to our side, and it’ll be exciting to see them in our forward line on Thursday night. It'll be an emotional game for James, I'm sure. He won a premiership there and he played there for four or five seasons.

"Internally we're just hoping that he competes at every contest. If he can jag a couple of goals to go along with that, then that'd be fantastic.”

Lewis Johnston (seven goals) and young midfielder Sam Kerridge (33 possessions and four goals) have also been recalled to the Crows team that beat Greater Western Sydney following dominant performances in the SANFL trial against Sturt.

Promising defender Sam Shaw has recovered from hamstring tightness that saw him sit out most of Adelaide’s trial match win over GWS. Shaun McKernan will support Sam Jacobs in the ruck and provide another strong target in attack.

Sanderson said several players, including McKernan, had been rewarded for strong pre-season form.

“Sam Shaw hardly played for us at all last year. Matt Jaensch and Sam Kerridge were in and out of the side. Lewy Johnston and Jarryd Lyons had limited opportunities, as did Shaun McKernan and Brodie Martin. Then there are guys like Jason Porplyzia and Matty Wright, who didn’t have great years by their own standards, but are back in form,” Sanderson said.

“There are some good stories of guys who have worked their backsides off over the summer and forced their way into the Round One side, which is great.”

Draftee Matt Crouch has been named as an emergency alongside forward Josh Jenkins and athletic defender Cam Ellis-Yolmen. Sanderson said Crouch was “really close” to making his AFL debut.

“Matt’s been super impressive from day one and he showed during the NAB Challenge that he’s capable of playing at the level,” he said.

“If anything, his brother coming back probably kept him out of the side this week. But don’t worry; those two are going to play a lot of footy for us in the not-too-distant future.”

Defenders Rory Laird and Brent Reilly are among the players that will line up in Adelaide’s SANFL trial against Woodville-West Torrens at AAMI Stadium on Saturday morning.
