Adelaide CEO Andrew Fagan has been appointed to the AFL’s new Competition Committee which will guide discussion around decision-making for the League’s future.

He is among a group of 12 people chosen from Club ranks including presidents, chief executives, coaches, football managers and players, who will also be joined by key AFL staff and AFL Players Association representation.

Their primary purpose is to ensure the many different streams of work across the entire AFL business work together to progress the game, both on-field and commercially.

Adelaide’s Board of Directors nominated Fagan for the committee, which will have a number of focus topics including player movement, competition structure, second tier leagues and innovation among others.

“I consider it a privilege to be given an opportunity to make a contribution to the way in which the AFL competition and the game more broadly operates and evolves in coming years,” Fagan said.

“There is a lot to like about the current landscape but there are a number of exciting opportunities to adapt and evolve the game for the benefit of all stakeholders”.

AFL General Manager Football Operations Steve Hocking said more than 40 nominations had been received, with the AFL seeking to find a balance of representation across players, coaches and club administrators.

“Representatives will stay on the committee for a maximum of three years and we envisage all clubs getting the opportunity to be represented at some point in the future,” Hocking said.

“There are many people across the industry who can make a strong contribution and this initial group, coupled with those who will then join the committee in time, is to primarily focus on how we advance our game whilst protecting its heritage.”

Under this new structure, key projects are to be presented to the Competition Committee, who will then provide their endorsement to the AFL Commission. The AFL Commission retains final decision-making authority.

The initial committee representatives from across the League are Colin Carter (Geelong), Eddie McGuire (Collingwood), Peggy O’Neal (Richmond), Andrew Fagan (Adelaide), Andrew Ireland (Sydney), Justin Reeves (Hawthorn), Chris Fagan (Brisbane), Brad Scott (North Melbourne), Chris Davies (Port Adelaide), Craig Vozzo (West Coast), Patrick Dangerfield (AFLPA) and Steven May (Gold Coast).

Hocking will Chair the group, with the AFL to be represented by current Commissioner and former West Coast and Sydney Swans premiership player Jason Ball, General Manager AFL Commercial Operations Kylie Rogers and AFLW Head of Football Nicole Livingstone.

Head of Competitions and Player Movement Josh Vanderloo and Game Analysis Manager Patrick Clifton will join meetings as required, while AFL Players Association General Manager Player Relations Brett Murphy will represent the players’ union.
