The rollercoaster ride of 2014 extended to Adelaide’s Fan Fantasy team last weekend, as the Fantasy Crows suffered a heartbreaking loss to North Melbourne.

It was a narrow 40-point defeat at the hands of the Fan Fantasy league leaders. In similar fashion to the real-life Crows, Adelaide’s fan-selected team has failed to string together consecutive victories in the past four rounds.

The loss leaves the Fantasy Crows a lonely third on the Official AFL Fan Fantasy ladder, two wins behind Brisbane in second and two victories ahead of Port Adelaide in fourth.

But it was not all doom and gloom. The Fantasy Crows scored the second-highest total of the league and showed that we can be a contender for the title this year. Whilst the result was definitely ‘one that got away’, the team already has one eye looking ahead to our next clash with North Melbourne in Round 18.

Many of our own acquitted themselves well, with Scott Thompson (120), Rory Sloane (106) and Sam Jacobs (101) all notching huge scores.

Tom Liberatore (126) is fast becoming an AFL Fantasy freak, and has now scored seven Fantasy tons on the trot. Gary Ablett (118) was prolific again, as was fellow premium midfielders Scott Pendlebury (114) and Michael Barlow (113).

Rebounding defender Rhyce Shaw (113) posted his biggest total of the season, while incoming ruckman Stefan Martin (100) also excelled on debut for the Fantasy Crows.

Richmond’s Dustin Martin (111) continues to prop-up our forward line after posting another huge score last round.

West Coast is our opponent this week. The Eagles were disappointing against Port Adelaide last round and have only won two games for the season.

In terms of our team, the quandary remains up forward where Fantasy points have been hard to come by this season.

We are strapped for cash at the moment, so perhaps our best move is to inject another cash cow while forward options are scarce. West Coast’s Jeremy McGovern is the outstanding downgrade with a break even of -34 for Round 14, but the tough call is which of our forwards do we sacrifice?

Jed Bews in defence is another concern. The young Cat was cut from Geelong’s thrashing of St Kilda and could struggle to win back his spot with a number of injured teammates on the comeback trial. Vote below on whether we consider other bargain defenders or if we back Bews in.
