Ben Rutten’s final kick in AFL football will go down as one of the most memorable moments in Crows history.

Voted into No.2 in our Crows Goals of the Year countdown, Rutten’s goal in the dying moments of Adelaide’s Round 23 clash with St Kilda came in fairytale fashion.

Still reeling after being bundled out of the finals race the previous day, the Crows left nothing on the table in the Club’s final outing of the season. Adelaide booted 11 goals to three in the opening half to have the result in hand by the main break.

But the biggest story of the day came in the final few minutes once Eddie Betts plucked a mark inside forward 50m.

Having announced his retirement the previous month, Rutten knew he had one last chance to salute to The 19th Man.

‘Truck’ ran all the way from defence to receive a handball from Betts, who was lining up for his sixth goal of the day, and kicked truly to bring the crowd of almost 45,000 to its feet.

Teammates swarmed Rutten in what was a fitting celebration of one of the game’s greatest full-backs of all time.

Rutten made a point of handballing with his next disposal as Adelaide finished eventual 79-point winners to see out the 2014 season.
