October 1, 1991: Ruckman Mark Mickan became the first recipient of the Adelaide’s Club Champion award.

Mickan, originally from Renmark and West Adelaide and recruited by the Crows from the Brisbane Bears, was not selected for the first three games of the 1991 season but polled 37 votes to win by two from Tony McGuinness.

Adelaide’s only All-Australian selection, Nigel Smart, finished third on 32, followed by Andrew Jarman (29), Chris McDermott (25), David Marshall (24) and Simon Tregenza (20).

Mickan, who was presented with a medal and Gold Jacket, was praised by inaugural captain McDermott. “Mark has been a fantastic inspiration to us all,” he said. “He tries his heart out every week.”

Adelaide chairman Bob Hammond described Mickan - who captained Brisbane in its first years in the competition - a “champion player and champion person”.

Defender Rodney Maynard won the Best Team Man award.
