STEMfooty has gone beyond the classroom, sharing the connection between science, maths and sport with thousands of South Australian children at Science Alive!

Science Alive! is a three-day event which aims to build awareness in the community of the scope and importance of science and technology in our everyday lives, celebrating South Australia's successes and inspiring future generations of science and technology professionals.

STEMfooty educators were joined by AFLW midfielder Anne Hatchard to help children test their reaction time, check statistics and code their own pedometer, which they could take home and continue the learning at home.

STEMfooty Manager Katie Gloede said the event was a huge success.

“Football is a great opportunity to show kids how science and maths comes alive in a real-life scenario they are familiar with,” Gloede said.

“Building a pedometer is a great example of where maths and engineering combine with hands on learning and creativity.

“We hope this experience sparks an interest in STEM and hopefully when they are watching an AFLW or AFL game next year, they will look at it with a greater appreciation of the maths and science which sits behind the game.”

Science Alice! Event Director Dan Lindsay said they were delighted for STEMfooty to join Science Alive for the first time this year.

“We had a busy weekend with more than 13,000 visitors over the three days including over 3,500 high school students on the Friday,” Lindsay said.

“It is great to have support of the Adelaide Crows Foundation in highlighting STEM programs and career opportunities in SA.”

STEMfooty is a 10-week in-school program for Year 7 students combines classroom learning with hands-on experiences to increase student understanding of and interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

The free program is closely aligned to the curriculum, covering half of the ACARA content descriptors for both science and maths in one term.
