When Adelaide defender Brodie Smith isn’t playing football, there’s another special mate he tries to spend as much time with as he can.

That mate is his two-year-old Kelpie, Duke.

Smith, who has played 207 AFL games for the Crows since being selected at the 2010 National Draft, spoke about the bond he has with Duke on this week’s episode of The Crows Show.

Although Smith adores Duke, he tells Belinda Sloane the four-legged friend only has eyes for another in the household.

“I got him a couple of years ago, Chelsea Randall actually has his brother so he gets to go on playdates with his brother which is quite nice,” Smith said.

“He’s definitely a mummy’s boy, he’s a real sook with (partner) Issy.

“He’s got a few tricks - sit, stay, turn around, play dead.

“We ask him to do things and he’ll just go off and he’ll tell us when it’s time to leave the park, he’ll tell us when it’s time for dinner, so he definitely runs the house.”

Smith captained the Crows to their win against crosstown rivals Port Adelaide in last week’s Showdown LI with Rory Sloane out injured.

The 30-year-old said it was “a huge honour” to skipper the side not only in a Showdown but also in Adelaide’s first win of 2022.

“For myself being a South Australian, to captain a Showdown was unbelievable,” Smith said.

“I think I have been to every one for the last 20 years, so it was an amazing night for myself and my family.

“After running out and giving that pre-game speech, there’s not too much that changes out on the field.

“You just try to play your role and lead the way and I guess in a game like that just try to keep everyone calm and focused on the task ahead.”

Also on the Crows Show this week, Rory Laird gives an insight into his rehab and return from a broken hand.

The Crows Show airs on Channel 7 on Sunday at 3pm.
