As diehard Crows fan Jessica Steele celebrated Crows Captain Jordan Dawson’s goal against Carlton, she never imagined becoming part of an iconic moment.

Steele, her husband Dene and their three children - Archer, Harper and Walker - had a clear and close view of Dawson lining up for goal along the boundary at Adelaide Oval in the second quarter.

As the ball sailed through the big sticks and the siren sounded to signal half-time, Dawson turned to the crowd with arms wide and Steele, who was full of emotion, put both her hands in the air.

Her one-year-old son Walker was being held in a carrier on her and his bottle filled in one of her outstretched arms.

It was captured by AFC Media, giving Steele a permanent reminder of the moment, instantly bringing her back to the emotions.

“Five minutes before Dene said to me ‘we’ve got amazing seats, imagine if someone like Keays or Rachele gets a goal and they come and hug us’,” Steele said.

“We had some Carlton supporters sitting behind us and they were trying to put Daws off then I screamed back ‘you’ve got this Jordan, you’re going to kick this’.

“I saw him smile and I was like ‘oh my goodness, he heard me, then when he kicked a goal, I was screaming so loudly, I was so happy when he turned around.

“I don’t know what was going through my head, I forgot I had a baby on me for a second, I was ecstatic he kicked the goal.”

Making it even more significant, Steele’s one-year-old son Walker was named after Crows veteran Taylor Walker.

“We had named our son Archer and our daughter Harper, both those names end in ‘er’, so when we were naming Walker, I googled names ending in ‘er’ and we couldn’t find any that we liked,” Steele said.

“We went to Japan for a holiday and we had to pay for a subscription so we could watch the footy in Japan and Tex Walker’s name came up on the screen. I said ‘Walker’, that name ends in an ‘er’ and it’s perfect because he’s our favourite player.

“Dene was like ‘yep, done, that’s our son’s name, we are going to name him Walker Steele’.

“The biggest commitment of all is naming your child after a football player and Walker is the best player in our eyes, he’s a great role model, he’s a leader, he shows passion and loyalty because he’s only ever played for the Crows.”

The Crows crazed family also have a dog named Danger, after former Adelaide midfielder Patrick Dangerfield, and called their cat Sid, after draftee Sid Draper.

“Dene’s favourite player for the Crows was Patrick Dangerfield, but when Danger left, his new favourite player became Tex Walker,” Steele said.

“This year was our daughter’s first year of reception and she’s always wanted a cat, and we always spoke about that if we got a cat, we’ll name it after another Crows player.

“We got a boy cat and decided to name it Sid, after Sid Draper because he’s one of the best new draftees, he’s an explosive midfielder, so that’s why we decided to name our cat after him.”

Steele was, however, not always an Adelaide fan, with her family supporting crosstown rival Port Adelaide.

But meeting Dene led to her switching allegiances.

“My husband has always gone for Crows, he’s supported them since he was a toddler,” Steele said.

“I used to go for Port Adelaide and when I got with Dene, he turned around and gave me an ultimatement of ‘if you want to be with me, you’ve got to go for the Crows’.

“That was about 10 years ago, now. I didn’t love Port Adelaide, I was a dancer by heart, so I only barracked for them because my family went for them.

“But after meeting Dene, I follow football now just as much as he does. We watch every talk show, every single game, we go to every single Crows game, so I’ve fallen in love with the Crows.”

Steele says she loves sharing her passion for footy and the Crows with her young family, as it brings them closer together.

“Every single one of us in one way is addicted to the Adelaide Crows,” Steele said.

“(Being in that photo) is a moment we will never forget, it was awesome.

“Everyone who knows us has sent us the photo saying ‘you need to print it off and frame it’, so we’re in the process of doing that.

“This week alone has been amazing, just from that photo.”
