Day one of the 2025 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period kicked off on Monday morning and Crows General Manager of List Management Justin Reid featured on Trade Radio.
Adelaide is set to be active during the Trade Period, with two-time Brisbane premiership forward Callum Ah Chee informing the Club he wishes to join the Crows.
Reid spoke on Trade Radio to AFL.com.au's Cal Twomey about the Club’s interest in Melbourne premiership star Christian Petracca and how it would go about landing a deal with the Lions for Ah Chee.
Here are five key takeaways from Reid’s Trade Radio interview, plus an insight from Lions’ list manager Dom Ambrogio regarding a trade with Ah Chee.
Reid on Crows’ interest in Christian Petracca and the Demons’ decision to nominate the Suns
Adelaide met with Petracca earlier last week and showed some interest in the Demons’ premiership midfielder after he expressed his desire to seek opportunities at another football Club.
However, the four-time All-Australian has now dominated Gold Coast as his preferred destination.
Reid said it was always going to be difficult to facilitate a deal given the circumstances.
“We took the phone call there, and (with) a quality player like that, you certainly have some interest,” Reid said.
“But there was also a reality with Trade week and what that might look like.
“We are very strong 25 and under, so we are very keen to add some stability to the list at the moment.
“(But) we are realists, so we had to move on pretty quickly.”
Callum Ah Chee chooses Crows
Two-time Brisbane premiership forward has nominated the Crows as his preferred destination, as he also seeks new opportunities at a new Club.
Ah Chee has played 169 games since being drafted by the Gold Coast Suns in 2015.
He joined the Lions in 2020 and featured in Brisbane’s back-to-back flags in 2024 and 2025.
This past season Ah Chee booted 24 goals from 26 matches.
Reid said the 27-year-old would be a solid addition to the Crows’ side, as they looked to further improve the squad.
“It’s great to have Cal nominate the Club,” Reid said.
“We still need to work through what that trade looks like with Dom (Lions’ list manager).
“He’s been a great servant for Brisbane. He’s a two-time premiership star, he’ll certainly add some flexibility to the list.
“He was a Crows supporter growing up and had No.23 on the back of his guernsey growing up, so there’s certainly some romance with that.”
Reid said the Crows would not give up their first-round draft pick for Ah Chee.
Meanwhile Lions list manager Dom Ambrogio said Ah Chee’s value would be “really high”.
“He is a two-time premiership player, he is versatile, and selfless,” Ambrogi said.
“We’ll work through it with the Crows.”
Crows’ Draft hand
The 2025 Telstra AFL Draft will be held over two nights on November 19-20, and Adelaide currently holds picks No 15, 46, and 53.
Players and draft picks, or a combination of both, can be exchanged during the Trade Period.
Reid said the Crows were comfortable with the talent already at the Club, and the growth from players, which was evident this year.
But ultimately missing out on winning a Premiership meant the Club was always looking at ways to improve.
“We understand that at the moment we have got Pick No.14, and that might even end up being Pick No.16, and
“There is a fair bit going around us as well, so I think we will try and work in with some of those deals and see how we can better that hand.
“We are pretty open-minded (with Pick No.15), whether that goes to the Draft or whether we use that some other way, we are very open-minded with all our pics.”
Reid on Melbourne star Clayton Oliver being open to a trade
Premiership midfielder Clayton Oliver has been linked to being open to a trade, and the Crows have been open to a discussion with the Demons.
Reid said there were always lots of Clubs with interest when a player of Oliver’s quality was available, and the Crows would see how to play out.
“We certainly take phone calls, and we do our due diligence,” Reid said.
“There is a bit more work that has to go into that, but I think the quality of players like that, or individuals, you certainly need to do your work.
“But there’s no guarantee what we will do there yet.”
Crows’ ruck stocks
Adelaide has previously been linked to having had some interest in South Australian ruckman Sam Draper.
However, as an unrestricted free agent, the former Essendon big man has landed at Brisbane via free agency.
Reid said the Crows were confident in their current ruck stocks with Reilly O’Brien and Lachlan McAndrew - who the Club signed via the AFL’s pre-season Supplemental Selection Period in February.
“We still think we’ve got some good depth there with Lachie McAndrew and his season in the SANFL.
“Obviously we’ve got Reilly O’Brien, so we’ve got a bit of depth coming there from a height perspective and now with the new five-on-the-bench and the ruck rule, there’s just some stuff we need to look at first.”
