For Adelaide defender Chelsea Biddell, leadership isn’t a quality that has always come naturally.

But as Biddell prepares to notch her 75th AFLW game in the Crows’ elimination final against St Kilda, she has come to embrace her voice both on and off the field.

And when the 27-year-old was voted into the’ leadership group for the first time at the start of this season, it marked a culmination of years of quiet growth and hard work.

“That was pretty special to be announced as part of the leadership group this year, especially to be voted in by your peers, it’s very nice,” Biddell said.

“(Leadership) has been something I’ve been working on over the years, when I started to get games consistently, it was then being able to bring others along with me.

“I had to work really hard on that part of my game, especially when I started to become one of the more experienced players.

“It’s definitely been challenging. In terms of on the field, I’m not really the loudest person, so I think it was just (developing) that voice and communication that I really had to build on."

Although Biddell has become one of the mainstays in the Crows’ defensive unit, her journey to 75 games hasn’t always been smooth sailing.

Drafted as a forward at the 2019 AFLW Draft, Biddell found it hard to crack into a strong Crows side and was in and out of the team until switching from the forward line to the back in 2022.

From then, Biddell hit her straps, playing a key part in the Crows’ 2022 (season six) premiership and earning an All-Australian blazer the following campaign.

“It hasn’t always been easy, I think at the start of my career I was in and out of the team, so it was pretty tough throughout those couple of years,” Biddell said.

“I was able to make my way into the team eventually as a defender.

“For me, it’s just about playing consistent footy. Probably at the start of my career I was a bit inconsistent, so to be able to play at the level consistently has been a huge thing for me.

“This Club means so much to me, I grew up supporting the Crows, so to be able to run out for the 75th time wearing the tri colours, it’s a very special moment.”

Biddell will notch her 75th game in the Crows’ elimination final against St Kilda at Norwood Oval on Sunday afternoon.

She encouraged Crows fans to pack out Norwood Oval as the team vie to keep their premierships hopes alive.

“This year we had to work really hard to get into the finals, it came down to the very last game.

“But we have a very strong belief. We obviously have the experience, a lot of the girls have been here for six of the consecutive finals series.

“To be at home, in front of the home fans will be very special and hopefully we can get some revenge from Round One.

"It's a pretty big game for us and our Club, so it would be good to get out there and get the win.”

Adelaide faces St Kilda at Norwood Oval on Sunday, with the first bounce at 2.35pm.
