Kuwarna AFLW utility Madison Newman has opened up on her goal celebrations, sharing the inspiration behind them, and the stories that have shaped each one.
The 25-year-old unveiled new goal celebrations during the team’s Round Two match against Carlton, and its Round Three win against Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) at Unley Oval on Saturday afternoon.
After kicking a goal in the first quarter against the Eagles, Newman covered her eye to celebrate in what was a special gesture for her friend’s dog, Fred, who lost an eye.
"For the goal on the weekend, that (celebration) was for one of my best mates,” Newman said.
“Her dog actually has one eye, so it's a bit of a miracle the dog lasted, but he's on the mend now, that was just to cheer her up.
“The dog has got a lot of energy, so the one eye definitely doesn't stop it."
The celebration on Saturday followed that of one against Carlton, done as a tribute towards her Winging It podcast co-host and teammate, Kiera Mueller,
Mueller suffered a serious knee injury the week prior which ruled her out for the rest of the season.
"That was (the celebration) unknown to Kiz (Kiera Mueller), we always spoke about if one of us was kicking a goal, we'd need to pull out the Winging It celly," Newman said.
"She went down with a knee injury, and I just thought that'd be the perfect time.
"She was watching the game from the hospital, and I thought that would cheer her up."
The win against the Eagles was the team’s first of the 2026 season and had plenty of highlights, including a checkside goal kicked by recruit Jemmika Douglas.
Newman said it was a special way for Douglas to kick her first League goal.
"I think she just bloody tore it off on the weekend. I just think you can see how each week she's getting more and more confident," Newman said.
"She came through the doors probably not even a month ago, she just had a crack and she just ripped in.
"She has been like that from the start, and I think the fans should be really excited about her. We're excited to have her."
Newman has enjoyed a solid start to the 2026 AFLW season, averaging 25.7 disposals, while kicking a goal in each game.
She reflected on her early-season form, and credited new Senior Coach Ryan Davis for the impact he has had in his first season in charge.
"Ryan has just always put a lot of belief into me and always just wanted me to use my weapon, use my kick, and run in games," Newman said.
"I think he's just instilled massive belief, and he's always saying just have fun. He's been massive for me, and then also the girls make it so easy.
"It was good to get a win on the weekend and finally get some reward for effort."
Kuwarna will turn its attention to its Round Four match against Hawthorn at Kennedy Community Centre this Sunday at 12:35pm (ACST).
The game will be broadcast on 7Mate Adelaide, Fox Footy and Kayo.
