Adelaide will add another chapter to its AFLW rivalry with Brisbane when the two teams face off at Brighton Homes Arena on Sunday afternoon.

No two teams in the competition have played against each other more, and in the 14 matches between the two sides, 11 have been decided by fewer than three goals.

Ahead of the sides’ Round Six game, Davis spoke to the media and touched on the following topics.

Inside knowledge of the Lions

Having been an assistant at Brisbane for two years, Davis knows the Brisbane team firsthand.

But he also acknowledged both the Crows and the Lions have had significant list changes since their last meeting, 

“We do know the team inside and out, so we've just finished our team opposition (meeting),” Davis said.

“I won't go into too much detail, but we certainly have turned over a lot of rocks to figure out how we can beat them.

“Since the last time we played them, we've got seven different players, and they've also got seven different players from Round Four last year. 

“But you can't ignore the history that these two clubs have had over the journey, so it's a very exciting time for us to go up there, and we need to win just as much as they do. It will be a fantastic contest.”

Similar starts, high stakes

This weekend’s clash is shaping as a pivotal one for both sides.

Adelaide and Brisbane will enter Round Six with identical 2-3 records and sitting 12th and 11th on the AFLW ladder, respectively.

Despite the win-loss record, Davis said the Crows were encouraged by what they had built so far this season, particularly given the calibre of opposition they had faced.

“We want to win," Davis said.

“We felt like we gave ourselves good chances in the Sydney game and even Geelong on the weekend, we felt like we sort of shot ourselves in the foot a little bit in that regard.

“Being such a short season, you do need those early wins, but we feel that we're building our program and our system quite well.

“Would we like a couple of extra wins? Absolutely. The teams that we have played are sitting second, third and fourth, so that's just great to show the competition is getting better and better each year as well.”

Team defence the Crows’ key

Adelaide has been one of the competition's stronger attacking teams, but Davis said tightening up defensively would be a major focus heading into Sunday's clash.

The Crows Senior Coach said his side's ability to move the ball and generate scores had been pleasing, but conceding too many end-to-end scores had proven costly.

“We are happy with our offensive ball movement at the moment, we're able to score and score quite well,” Davis said.

“We're just giving up too many scores going end to end at the moment, so that's been a real focus. Certainly off the back of Geelong, the way they were able to move the football against us. 

“So team defence (will be an area of improvement). If we just have a sort of a 10 per cent increase in that, I think it's going to help us dramatically.”

India Rasheed’s development

Second-year Crow India Rasheed had an interrupted pre-season and start to this year’s campaign, but earned a call-up to the side in Round Three.

Since then, the 19-year-old is becoming a pivotal pillar of the Crows’ attack and shone during last weekend’s game against Geelong with two goals.

Davis said he was pleased with Rasheed’s progress and looked forward to seeing her rise to the challenge against the Lions.

“She's a fantastic player, super smart, a really good competitor,” Davis said. 

“She's been able to get some more game time, some more run in her legs, and you can see she doesn't need too many touches to impact the game and impact the scoreboard. 

“(We are) very pleased with how she's tracking, and looking forward to her opportunity again against Brissy this weekend.”

Selection and Sunday’s challenge

Adelaide is yet to finalise its line-up for Sunday's clash, with a squad to be announced on Thursday evening, before a final team of 23 on Friday afternoon.

Davis said strong competition for spots remained ahead of match committee.

“We haven't got through match committee just yet,” Davis said.

“We'll get through training today, but there's certainly spots up for grabs.”

Davis said the Crows would be looking to capitalise on their strengths against the Lions, while tightening up their team defence.

“Being able to shut down what they want to do off the back of our offence, I think we're going to be able to put a score on,” Davis said.

“But like I said, that team defence, if we just tidy that part up, (it will be) not so much about stopping what they're doing, more about taking care of what we can control.”

Adelaide faces Brisbane at Brighton Homes Arena on Sunday at 4.35pm (ACST).
