A breakout season has seen emerging ruckman Reilly O’Brien take out the Dr Brian Sando OAM award for his persistent and professional approach to his football.

The award was introduced in 2012 in memory of long-serving Crows doctor and Life Member Brian Sando OAM, who passed away after a battle with illness.

It recognises the Crow who best demonstrates resilience and determination in their preparation.

O’Brien set his sights firmly on the big time in 2019, making a statement in the Club’s two pre-season time trials.

The 202cm ruckman finished third in the first trial in November and fifth in the second in January - a reflection of his commitment to the off-season and pre-season programs.

When he got his opportunity at AFL level, replacing an injured Sam Jacobs in Round Three, O’Brien made the No.1 ruck spot his own.

He went on to play 18 AFL games, demonstrating elite preparation for each match-up, both from a team perspective and as an individual.

The 23-year-old averaged 33 hit-outs per game to go with 15 disposals, four clearances and three marks.

In July, O’Brien signed a two-year contract extension, ensuring he would be at West Lakes until at least the end of 2021.

He joins teammates Tom Doedee, Rory Sloane, David Mackay and Daniel Talia as recipients of the award.
