Adelaide’s young talent was on display on Saturday as the Crows AFLW side defeated Fremantle by 17 points in a trial match in Perth.

Midfielders Anne Hatchard, 21, and Ebony Marinoff, 22, led the way through the middle, while Eloise Jones, 20, and Madison Newman, 19, impressed in the forward line.

Experienced defender Marijana Rajcic stood up in the backline, while veteran forward Courtney Gum was on song, finishing the game with two majors.

A purple patch in the second quarter saw Adelaide go on a six-goal scoring streak, thanks to majors from Jones, Gum, Newman and Najwa Allen, plus two late from Renee Forth.

Heading into the third quarter, Adelaide led by 31 points after keeping Fremantle goalless in the second.

Three Dockers goals to one in the second half allowed the home side to reduce the margin, but it was not enough to take the win from the Crows, who finished 8.4 (52) to 5.5 (35) victors.

Post-game, Adelaide coach Matthew Clarke said the victory set his side up nicely for Round One.

“Our defensive pressure was back at the level we expect, particularly in the third quarter,” Clarke said.

“Through the midfield, (Anne) Hatchard was very very good, Ange Foley had a really good game for us as well.

“Up forward, Renee Forth looked good and (Courtney) Gum really found her rhythm with her teammates, and MJ (Rajcic) was excellent across the back half.

“Of the young ones, I thought Nikki Gore was excellent too.”

Unfortunately, winger Deni Varnhagen went down clutching her knee in the first quarter and did not return for the remainder of the game.

She will undergo scans in the coming days.

Sophie Li was also unable to finish the came after suffering a concussion and will be assessed over the next week.
