ADELAIDE has smashed its West Coast hoodoo with a record 76-point win, the Crows belting the Eagles 21.7 (133) to 8.9 (57) in front of 38,162 fans at AAMI Stadium.

The 76–point win bettered Adelaide’s previous greatest winning margin of 75 points against West Coast set way back in 1997. It was also the Crows’ highest ever score against the Eagles.

Skipper Simon Goodwin was the hero up forward with seven goals while Brett Burton (three goals), Kurt Tippett (two goals), Jason Porplyzia (two goals) and Bernie Vince (two goals) provided plenty of support.

Defenders Nathan Bock, Andrew McLeod and Graham Johncock were simply brilliant in restricting West Coast to just eight goals and Michael Doughty put in a solid performance against match-winner Daniel Kerr.

The only downside to Adelaide’s win was a potential knee injury to promising tall forward Tippett.

The 201cm Queenslander landed awkwardly on his left knee and was helped off the ground, but returned to the bench to rapturous applause in the fourth quarter.

The Crows started their plan for a four-quarter attack against West Coast in brilliant fashion with a six-goal to two first term.

Tippett drew first blood after marking strongly on the lead and classy midfielder Porplyzia extended Adelaide’s lead after converting from a free kick.

Coach Neil Craig backed Jon Griffin against West Coast ruckman Dean Cox and the youngster was a little overzealous in the opening minutes, giving away a free kick which resulted in a goal to the All-Australian.

But the Crows, determined not to let the big man once again spoil their party, continued to pile on the scoreboard pressure.

The enigmatic Vince got on the end of a sharp handpass from Simon Goodwin and snapped cleverly to nail his first goal. The skipper then slotted through the first of his of seven goals after out-muscling opponent Adam Selwood.

West Coast threw numbers behind the ball to try to stop the Adelaide avalanche and the crowd became frustrated as the home side chipped the ball around.

But the Crows quickly gave their supporters more to cheer about.

Brett Burton, who started on the wing, slipped forward and nudged Brett Jones under the ball before running into an open goal and when Tippett scored his second major the Crows were up by 33.

A late goal from David Wirrpanda reduced Adelaide’s lead to 27 points at the first change.

West Coast looked like launching an all-too familiar comeback in the second term when Quinten Lynch kicked a 60m bomb in the opening minutes.

But Bock racked up 12 touches in defence for the term and helped propel the Crows to another four-goal quarter.

Tyson Edwards, who briefly took Goodwin’s place in attack, broke Adelaide’s scoring drought with his first goal, which triggered the start of young talent time at AAMI Stadium.

Vince, Richard Douglas, David Mackay, Nathan van Berlo, Brad Symes and Luke Jericho all got involved as the Crows kicked successive goals through Scott Thompson and Goodwin.

Adam Hunter salvaged a late goal for the West Coast, but Jericho’s major gave Adelaide a 37-point lead at half-time.

The third term was a seesawing affair with both teams taking turns in gaining the ascendancy.

West Coast coach John Worsfold struggled to find the right match-up for Goodwin who continued to lurk dangerously across half-forward.

The skipper booted his third goal of the game in the opening minutes of the term and when van Berlo goaled from a free kick, Adelaide slipped out to a 48-point lead.

Kerr, who had been quiet by his standards, escaped Doughty’s grasp to kick a goal and subsequent majors to Wirrpanda and Ashley Hansen trimmed Adelaide’s lead.

Porplyzia, who had oozed class in the midfield for most of the afternoon, set sail on his second goal for the game before goals to Wirrpanda and Ashley Hansen cut the margin back to 37 points at the final change.

Crows fans have learned the hard way not to underestimate the comeback capacity of the West Coast Eagles, but Goodwin ensured supporters enjoyed the last quarter by booting four majors in a landslide final term.
