Defender Chayce Jones is recovering well from a corked quad on the weekend and is pushing to be available for this weekend’s Showdown.

Jones copped a knock in the second quarter of Saturday’s loss to the Western Bulldogs and tried to continue playing but it got progressively worse and he was subbed out of the game in the third quarter.

He ran well on Tuesday and is expected to train with the main group on Thursday ahead of a decision on his availability for selection.

“Pleasingly he’s (Jones) progressing quite well, he did some running today and the way that he’s making progress we think he’ll be a chance to play this week,” Head of Football Adam Kelly said.

Midfielder Jackson Hately will be actively managing groin soreness in the rehab group in coming weeks which present an opportunity for him to make significant in-roads ahead of what looms to be a big pre-season.

Hately didn’t play in the inter-club scratch match in Melbourne a fortnight ago and will not be available for selection this weekend.

“Jackson has been suffering some groin soreness throughout the entirety of the 2021 season which he has managed really effectively to this point in time and been able to play the majority of matches,” Kelly said.

“But it’s getting to a point now where we think rest for Jackson is appropriate and that will be the plan over the next couple of weeks and in all likelihood he probably won’t play again in season 2021 as we look to give him the best possible opportunity to have a really strong off-season in preparation for 2022.”

Matt Crouch, who reported some groin soreness following his first game back in the SANFL three weeks ago, has continued training and it’s anticipated he will be in a position to play some minutes in the SANFL this weekend.

“Matt trained with the main group today and trained really well, the plan at this stage is that Matt will play in the SANFL this weekend but we do have some caution around that as has been the case with his rehabilitation from groin surgery.

“There have been some ups and downs and whilst he trained well today we do have some caution around his availability and we’ll continue to monitor that throughout the week.”
