Adelaide's new AFLW Head of Development Jack Hombsch says getting to know the players, coaches and staff tops his list of priorities as he comes into the role.

Hombsch officially joined the Club on Wednesday and arrived at West Lakes after a 116-game career with GWS, Port Adelaide and most recently Gold Coast.

The 28-year-old hung up his AFL boots in August and said he had his eye on development coaching for the past 12 months.

Throughout his career, Hombsch was renowned as a reliable and courageous defender and while at the Suns worked closely with their young and emerging players.

Speaking to the media for the first time, Hombsch said he was keen to build relationships and help players improve.

“I think playing at three Clubs, the relationship building has been a really important part of that and that’s going to be the same here,” Hombsch said.

“I think that’s probably what pushed me down the path of wanting to be a development coach a little bit as it’s as much relationship building as it is coaching.

“Hopefully I’m not just a coach but someone they can use as a resource away from footy as well.

“I’m here to develop any skill which the girls see vital to their game but the main takeaway I want to have is that they feel valued and that my role is being useful.

“I am around to help with game plan, structures, skill development, basically anything they need I’ll be around to help.”

Hombsch said the success of the Club’s women’s program and the strong culture that had been building over the past five seasons attracted him to the role.

“I had a fair indication I would probably be finishing up footy this year… (and) I sort of put the feelers out to see if there were any opportunities back in Adelaide,” Hombsch said.

“It’s a great opportunity to transition from a player into coaching in the footy club ranks.

“It’s an extra bonus to be at a program that’s got so much success over such a short period of time.

“I haven’t met too many of the girls yet but to be around someone like Erin who’s just incredibly talented, Eb Marinoff, Chelsea Randall, there’s so many players around who I’m pretty excited to see up close.

“(I am) very grateful to get the opportunity here and pretty excited for the next chapter.”
