Tonight, midfielder Richard Douglas will become the 38th Crow to play 100 games, and only the second in guernsey No.26.
The first player to wear the No.26 jumper in 100 games (272 to be exact) was none other than dual -premiership captain and now senior assistant coach, Mark Bickley.
Bickley took a special interest in Douglas when he moved into locker No.26 at the end of 2005, and has built a strong relationship with the goalkicking onballer since returning to West Lakes as an assistant coach in 2009.
‘Bicks’ said it would be a special moment seeing Douglas run out in his 100th game against St Kilda at AAMI Stadium tonight.
“I just love that Richard’s wearing the (No.26) jumper,” Bickley told afc.com.au.
“I like Richard as a bloke. He’s a ripper fella and you do take a little bit more of an interest in a player wearing your guernsey after you finish up.
“Before I got to the Club, I watched him with a bit of interest and was introduced to him a couple of times. Since I’ve been at the Club, I‘ve built a really good relationship with him.
“It’s a nice affiliation to have, and to be able to watch him develop has been fantastic.”
Despite winning the Crows Club Champion award in 2010, Douglas is only now entering the prime of his career. The 25-year-old starred over the pre-season and rediscovered good form against Fremantle prior to the bye after missing six weeks with a hamstring strain.
Bickley said Douglas still had plenty of upside.
“Richard is very highly rated amongst the coaching staff,” he said.
“He’s a unique blend of player. He’s got good speed, is hard at the footy and courageous over the ball. He’s got extra penetration in his kick and people probably don’t realise that, so he catches teams out with it. He’s a wonderful team player as well, and his best is probably yet to come.”
