Growing up in a remote town in northern WA, Halls Creek, taking “hangers” was all part of the fun for Adelaide forward Shane McAdam.

And McAdam reckons spending hours practising those spectacular marks is the reason why he’s been able to create so many high-flying highlights during his time at the Crows.

Speaking on this week’s special one-hour edition of The Crows Show, McAdam said he used to compete against his mates back home to see who could take the biggest specky.

“(I learnt) watching a lot of the older boys who like to fly back home, who like to take hangers,” McAdam said.

“Growing up back home, you used to always try to race the bloke next to you to see who could take the biggest mark.

“It sort of comes naturally, now, which is good.”

Although McAdam, who has taken 42 marks and kicked 17 goals across 10 games so far this season, enjoys going up for big marks, he also prides himself on his pressure acts.

“Ever since I started playing footy, I’ve always been a good pressure player,” McAdam said.

“I want to try and bring that into the AFL level.

“(My strengths are) my tackles, pressuring around the footy and not being beaten in a one-on-one contest.

“I think my year has been a bit more consistent this year, compared to the past couple of years.”

Crows Assistant Coach James Rahilly describes McAdam’s marking ability as “a gift”.

“That’s a gift, I think he was born with it,” Rahilly said.

“We want to encourage it and the boys know, they try and block for him, just to get enough separation, so he can run and jump at the footy.

“This year I think he’s looked a lot fitter, he’s worked really hard in the gym and had a really good pre-season.

“Since he’s been in the AFL side, he’s been fantastic.

“His work rate up and down the ground and his ability to pressure the opposition, as well as find the footy and kick some goals, has been really pleasing.

“I think his leadership has probably grown this year as well, his communication on the field, which we’ve been working on.”

Also on The Crows Show this week, Scott Burns and Chris Sheedy explain how the club analyses the opposition before a game, while Sam Berry joins Tom Doedee to discuss his Hungry Jack's Whopper Moment.

The Crows Show airs on Channel 7 this Saturday at 3pm.
